The West Adelaide Bearcats travelled to Marion on Saturday night to take on the South Adelaide Panthers and returned home victorious after both teams put forward some brilliant displays from their young talent.
The women started slowly, trailing slightly for the majority of the first quarter until an injection of Fejo, namely Jasmin Fejo, started to turn things around. An Alex Pearce steal turned into a Jasmin Fejo layup and the scored was tied. After a number of further momentum swings, Tahlia Fejo found net on a three ball just before the buzzer to give the Bearcat women a 22-20 lead at the first break.
The game remained tight until a 29-9 last quarter saw the Bearcat women claim a 24 point victory (85-61). The Panthers had no answer, and seemingly no defenders, for Jasmin Fejo as she finished with a forty point effort courtesy of some incredible assists from her teammates.
The big fourth quarter lead saw all players hit the court, with Chloe Hodges earning her first Premier League minutes. Although she was 0-3 from the 3pt line, that doesn’t reflect the shooting prowess this young gun really has. Watch this one carefully, she’s bound to explode sometime soon.
In the men’s game, South’s struggle to contain the Bearcat youth continued as even a triangle-and-two zone couldn’t stop Patrick Thomas who had 18 points to his name at the half.
The men held a steady lead for much of the game eventually running out victors; 95-66. The large lead also saw the men’s bench cleared and Lachlan Haufe wasted no time taking advantage of his minutes, adding 8pts in just six minutes playing time.
Nick Bowler looked a little more confident in his time this week as he directed defensively and lead the hustle and intensity at both ends. A rip through drive from the wing saw him awarded two foul shots, eventually sinking the second for his first ever Premier League point.
The Bearcats look to back up their Saturday night sweep on Sunday afternoon as they take on the Sturt Sabres at Port Adelaide from 1:30pm.
